Fault code guide

AEG, Electrolux and Zanussi error codes

The first digit tells you the type of fault: on washing machines, E1x is filling, E2x is draining and E4x is the door. Dishwashers use the same idea with an i, so i20 is a draining problem.

Before you check anything: switch the appliance off at the wall first. Never remove covers or panels from a machine that’s plugged in. If you smell burning, see scorching or the appliance trips your electrics, leave it switched off and get it looked at. AEG, Electrolux and Zanussi are all Electrolux Group brands, and their machines generally share the same code system.

Washing machines: code by code

Some models show a C or beep pattern instead. Note the full code exactly as displayed before you call.

How to clean a washing machine pump filter
  1. E10E11C1 Not enough water is getting into the machine.

    Try this first
    • Check the tap is fully open and the inlet hose isn’t kinked.
    • Turn off the tap, disconnect the hose and clean the small filter in the connection.

If the supply is good, the inlet valve or pressure sensor needs testing.

  2. E20E21C2 A draining problem with the pump, drain hose or filter.

    Try this first
    • Switch off at the wall and clean the pump filter behind the access panel at the bottom front. Have towels ready.
    • Check the drain hose isn’t kinked or blocked.

If the filter and hose are clear, the drain pump has usually failed.

  3. E30 The water pressure (level) sensor isn’t working correctly.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Switch off for a minute and restart.

If it keeps appearing, the sensor or its tube needs checking.

  4. E40 A door lock problem.

    Try this first
    • Close the door firmly and check nothing is caught in the seal.

If the door is shut and it persists, the door lock needs replacing.

  5. E50 A motor problem.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Check the drum isn’t overloaded and turns freely by hand when the machine is off.

If it returns, the motor or control board needs testing.

  6. E60 A heating problem.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Switch off and restart once.

If it comes back, the heater or temperature sensor needs testing. Leave it off if it trips your electrics.

  7. EF0EF3 A water leak, too much foam or an unbalanced load.

    Try this first
    • Check for water under the machine and around the hoses.
    • Use less detergent.
    • Redistribute the load.

If there’s water in the base with no outside cause, the leak needs tracing.

  8. EH0 A power supply problem.

    Try this first
    • Plug the machine directly into a wall socket rather than an extension lead.

If it continues on a direct socket, the supply or power board needs checking.

Dishwashers: code by code

Older models without a display signal the same faults with beeps or flashing lights: one for filling, two for draining, three for a leak.

How to clean a dishwasher filter
  1. i10i111 beep The dishwasher isn’t getting enough water.

    Try this first
    • Check the water supply valve is fully open.
    • Check the inlet and drain hoses for bends.

If the supply is good, the inlet valve or flow sensing needs testing.

  2. i202 beeps The dishwasher can’t drain the water in time.

    Try this first
    • Clean the filters in the base.
    • Check the drain hose for bends, and that the sink waste it connects to isn’t blocked.

If everything is clear, the drain pump needs checking.

  3. i303 beeps The anti-flood protection has detected water in the base.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Turn off the water supply and switch the dishwasher off.

Water in the base means a leak inside the machine. It needs tracing and repairing.

  4. i40i43i44 The pressure sensor can’t measure the water level properly.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Switch off and restart once.

If you see it again, the sensor needs checking.

  5. i50 A fault with the wash motor or circulation pump.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Switch off and restart once.

If it keeps appearing, the circulation pump or its control needs testing.

  6. i60i61i69i6C The dishwasher can’t heat the water properly.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Switch off and restart once.

If it returns, the heater or temperature sensor needs testing.

    Engineer if it returns
    • Switch off and restart once.

If it comes back, the level control needs checking.
