Common faults

Common oven faults, and what usually causes them.

The symptom tells us where to start looking. These are the most common oven problems, and what tends to be behind them.

01

Not heating up

The most common causes are a failed fan oven element, top or bottom element, thermostat or thermal cut-out. We test each with a meter rather than swapping parts on a hunch.

02

Fan not turning

A seized or noisy fan motor means uneven cooking and, in some ovens, no heat at all. Fan motors are usually a straightforward replacement.

03

Uneven cooking, wrong temperature

If recipes no longer behave, the thermostat or temperature sensor may be reading wrongly. We check the real temperature against the setting.

04

Dead after a power cut

Many ovens with a digital clock won’t heat until the time is set or the programmer is returned to manual mode. Worth checking before you book.

05

Grill not working

Usually a failed grill element or selector switch, and often fixed in a single visit.

06

Door, hinges and seals

A door that drops open or a seal that leaks heat wastes energy and can scorch cabinets. Hinges and seals are replaceable on most models.

07

Trips the electrics

Typically an element that has developed an earth fault. Leave the oven off at the cooker switch until it has been tested.

Before you book

A few quick checks that could save you a call-out.

We’d rather you didn’t pay for a visit you don’t need. If none of these help, we’re happy to take it from here.

  1. Check the clock or programmer is set. Many ovens won’t heat without it.
  2. Check the cooker switch on the wall is on and the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped.
  3. Make sure the oven isn’t in a locked, demo or child-safety mode.

Never remove panels or covers from an appliance that’s plugged in. If you smell burning, see scorching or the appliance trips your electrics, switch it off at the wall and leave it to us.

More appliance repair FAQs
Do you repair range cookers?

Yes. We repair range cookers from popular brands such as Rangemaster, Smeg, Belling and Leisure, including fans, elements, thermostats and controls on electric models and the electric ovens of dual fuel models.

How long does it take to replace an oven element?

If we have the right element with us, it is often done in under an hour. If it needs ordering, we’ll book a return visit with no second call-out charge.

My oven clicks while it’s on. Is that a fault?

A gentle click as the oven reaches temperature is normally the thermostat or a relay switching, which is expected. Loud buzzing, burning smells or sparks are not. Switch it off at the cooker switch and get in touch.
