The first digit tells you the type of fault: on washing machines, E1x is filling, E2x is draining and E4x is the door. Dishwashers use the same idea with an i, so i20 is a draining problem.

Before you check anything: switch the appliance off at the wall first. Never remove covers or panels from a machine that’s plugged in. If you smell burning, see scorching or the appliance trips your electrics, leave it switched off and get it looked at. AEG, Electrolux and Zanussi are all Electrolux Group brands, and their machines generally share the same code system.
Some models show a C or beep pattern instead. Note the full code exactly as displayed before you call.
If the supply is good, the inlet valve or pressure sensor needs testing.
If the filter and hose are clear, the drain pump has usually failed.
If it keeps appearing, the sensor or its tube needs checking.
If the door is shut and it persists, the door lock needs replacing.
If it returns, the motor or control board needs testing.
If it comes back, the heater or temperature sensor needs testing. Leave it off if it trips your electrics.
If there’s water in the base with no outside cause, the leak needs tracing.
If it continues on a direct socket, the supply or power board needs checking.
Older models without a display signal the same faults with beeps or flashing lights: one for filling, two for draining, three for a leak.
If the supply is good, the inlet valve or flow sensing needs testing.
If everything is clear, the drain pump needs checking.
Water in the base means a leak inside the machine. It needs tracing and repairing.
If you see it again, the sensor needs checking.
If it keeps appearing, the circulation pump or its control needs testing.
If it returns, the heater or temperature sensor needs testing.
If it comes back, the level control needs checking.
