Fault code guides

Appliance error codes, explained

A code on the display is your appliance telling you roughly where the problem is. These guides explain what each code means, what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time for an engineer.

Every code checked against the manufacturer’s own guidance, October 2026

Brand not listed?

Some codes are too model-specific to guess.

Brands such as Hotpoint, Indesit, Beko, Miele, Hoover, Candy, Whirlpool and Haier use codes that change a lot between model generations, so a general list can easily point you the wrong way. Send us the code and model number instead and we’ll look it up for your exact machine.

Reading a code

Three things worth knowing

  1. A code tells you which part of the system noticed a problem, not always which part has failed. A drain code can be a blocked filter or a dead pump.
  2. The same fault can show slightly differently on different models, such as E18 or F18 on a Bosch. Note the code exactly as it appears.
  3. If a code comes straight back after the simple checks, keep the appliance switched off. Repeated restarts can make some faults worse.
