A blocked pump filter is one of the most common reasons a washing machine won’t drain or spin. Cleaning it takes about 15 minutes, needs no tools on most machines, and could save you a call-out.
Safety first
Turn the machine off and pull out the plug. If it has just run a hot wash, wait for the water to cool before you start.
The filter sits behind a small hatch at the bottom front of the machine. Depending on the model, press the hatch to open it or lever it open with a coin.
Lay the towels down and put the tray in front of the hatch. If there’s a small emergency drain hose, pull it out, remove its cap and let the water run into the tray, emptying it as you go. If there’s no hose, unscrew the filter slowly, a little at a time, so the water comes out gradually.
Once the water stops, refit the cap on the drain hose and push it back in. Turn the filter anti-clockwise and pull it out.
Pull off any fluff, hair, coins or hair grips, then rinse the filter under warm water.
Wipe inside the filter opening with a damp cloth. If you can see the pump impeller, check it turns freely and nothing is wrapped around it.
Screw the filter back in firmly and close the hatch. Plug in, pour about a litre of water into the detergent drawer and run a drain or spin programme, watching the filter for leaks.
If the filter was clean and the machine still won’t drain, or you can hear the pump humming but no water moves, the drain pump or a blockage further along is the likely cause. That needs an engineer.
