Common faults

Common hob faults, and what usually causes them.

The symptom tells us where to start looking. These are the most common hob problems, and what tends to be behind them.

01

Cooking zone not heating

On ceramic and solid plate hobs, a failed element, energy regulator or switch; on induction, a coil, power board or cooling fan.

02

Touch controls not responding

Check the child lock first. If it isn’t that, the control board or touch panel may need replacing, or moisture may be interfering with it.

03

Induction pan detection errors

If the hob won’t recognise your pans, the cookware may not be compatible, or a coil or sensor may be at fault.

04

Trips the electrics

An earth fault in an element or a damaged connection. Leave it isolated at the cooker switch until it has been tested.

05

Cracked glass top

A cracked ceramic or induction top shouldn’t be used. Replacement glass is available for many models, and we quote before ordering.

06

Residual heat light stays on

Usually a sensor or control fault rather than anything dangerous, but worth having checked.

Before you book

A few quick checks that could save you a call-out.

We’d rather you didn’t pay for a visit you don’t need. If none of these help, we’re happy to take it from here.

  1. Look for a child lock or key symbol on the controls and hold it to unlock.
  2. Check the cooker switch on the wall and the circuit breaker.
  3. For induction, test with a pan that a fridge magnet sticks to firmly.

Never remove panels or covers from an appliance that’s plugged in. If you smell burning, see scorching or the appliance trips your electrics, switch it off at the wall and leave it to us.

Hob questions

Asked and answered.

More appliance repair FAQs
Why won’t my induction hob detect my pan?

Induction needs magnetic cookware. If a fridge magnet doesn’t stick firmly to the base, the pan won’t work. If it does and the zone still flashes, a coil or sensor may be faulty.

Can a cracked hob be repaired?

The glass itself can’t be repaired, but on many models it can be replaced. Stop using the hob until then, because cracked glass can expose live parts.

Do you repair gas hobs?

By law, work on gas appliances must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Mention a gas hob when you book and we’ll advise you on the best way to get it fixed.
