Common faults

Common dishwasher faults, and what usually causes them.

The symptom tells us where to start looking. These are the most common dishwasher problems, and what tends to be behind them.

01

Not draining

Blocked filters, sumps and drain hoses are common, as are failed drain pumps and sticking non-return valves.

02

Leaking

Worn door seals, a split hose, a cracked spray arm or a leaking pump. Many machines have a flood sensor that halts the cycle once water reaches the base.

03

Not cleaning properly

Blocked spray arms, a weak circulation pump or a heater that isn’t warming the water will all leave dishes dirty.

04

Not heating or drying

Usually a heating element, heat pump or temperature sensor fault, and normally repairable.

05

Won’t start, or stops mid-cycle

Door switches, control boards and flood protection can all stop a cycle. We read the error code and test from there.

06

Integrated door drops open

Broken door springs or cables are a very common fault on integrated machines, and a quick, inexpensive fix.

Before you book

A few quick checks that could save you a call-out.

We’d rather you didn’t pay for a visit you don’t need. If none of these help, we’re happy to take it from here.

  1. Clean the filter in the base of the machine and check the drain hose isn’t kinked.
  2. If your sink is draining slowly too, the blockage may be in the household waste pipe rather than the dishwasher.
  3. Make sure the water supply valve feeding the dishwasher is fully open.
Step by step: how to clean a dishwasher filter

Never remove panels or covers from an appliance that’s plugged in. If you smell burning, see scorching or the appliance trips your electrics, switch it off at the wall and leave it to us.

Dishwasher questions

Asked and answered.

More appliance repair FAQs
Why is there water left in the bottom of my dishwasher?

A small amount of water in the sump is normal. Water sitting above the filter usually means a blocked filter or drain hose, or a drain pump that has failed.

Is it worth repairing a dishwasher?

Pumps, heaters, seals and door springs are cost-effective repairs on most machines. If the control board has failed on an older budget model, we’ll compare the repair cost with replacement before you decide.

Do you repair integrated dishwashers?

Yes. We slide the machine out, repair it and refit it so the furniture door lines up with the rest of your kitchen.
