How-to guide

How to clean a dishwasher filter

If your dishwasher leaves bits on the plates, starts to smell, or leaves water in the bottom, start with the filter. It takes about ten minutes and no tools.

  • Time 10 minutes
  • Difficulty Easy
  • How often Bosch recommends cleaning the filter at least every two weeks, and LG every one to two weeks.
Before you start

What you’ll need

  • A soft brush, such as an old toothbrush
  • Warm running water
  • A sponge or cloth

Safety first

  • Never run the dishwasher without the filter in place, as debris can reach and damage the pump.
  • If you find broken glass, take care: it can be sharp.
Step by step

7 steps

  1. Switch off

Turn the dishwasher off. If it has just finished a hot programme, give it a few minutes to cool.

  2. Remove the lower basket

Pull the lower basket out so you can reach the filter in the base of the tub.

  3. Unscrew the filter

Twist the filter cylinder anti-clockwise and lift the whole filter unit out.

  4. Separate the parts

Most filters come apart into a coarse cylinder and a fine mesh. Separate them carefully.

  5. Clean them

Rinse both parts under the tap and use the soft brush to shift smaller bits. Don’t use anything abrasive: it can damage the fine mesh.

  6. Check the housing

Wipe out any debris left where the filter sits. If water is standing in the bottom, sponge it out.

  7. Refit and lock

Reassemble the filter, drop it back into place and twist it until it locks. On Bosch models the arrows line up when it’s secure.

Still not working?

When to call an engineer

If the filter is clean but the dishwasher still won’t drain, or shows a drain code such as Bosch E24 or AEG i20, the drain pump, non-return valve or hose may be blocked or faulty.
