Common faults

Common tumble dryer faults, and what usually causes them.

The symptom tells us where to start looking. These are the most common tumble dryer problems, and what tends to be behind them.

01

Not heating

Heater elements, thermostats and thermal fuses are common culprits, often triggered by restricted airflow. We fix the part and the cause.

02

Drum not turning

A snapped drive belt is the classic fault, although tension pulleys and motors also fail. Usually repairable in a single visit.

03

Overheating or cutting out

Often a blocked vent hose, lint build-up or a failing thermostat. Don’t ignore this one: stop using the dryer until it has been checked.

04

Squealing or thumping

Worn drum bearings, rollers, felt seals or the jockey pulley. We replace worn parts before they damage anything else.

05

Clothes still damp

On condenser models, a blocked condenser or failed pump; on sensor-dry models, dirty moisture sensors or a control fault can end the cycle too early.

06

Water container stays empty

The pump or its pipework has failed or blocked, so water collects inside the machine instead of in the container.

Before you book

A few quick checks that could save you a call-out.

We’d rather you didn’t pay for a visit you don’t need. If none of these help, we’re happy to take it from here.

  1. Empty the lint filter and, on condenser models, the water container and condenser unit.
  2. Check that a vented dryer’s hose isn’t crushed, kinked or blocked at the outlet.
  3. Check your model on Electrical Safety First’s free product recall checker.
Step by step: how to clean your tumble dryer’s filters

Never remove panels or covers from an appliance that’s plugged in. If you smell burning, see scorching or the appliance trips your electrics, switch it off at the wall and leave it to us.

More appliance repair FAQs
Is my tumble dryer safe to use?

If it smells of burning, gets unusually hot or cuts out mid-cycle, stop using it and unplug it until it has been checked. Overheating in a tumble dryer should always be taken seriously.

What is the difference between vented, condenser and heat pump dryers?

Vented dryers push warm, damp air outside through a hose. Condenser dryers cool that air and collect the water in a container. Heat pump dryers recycle the heat, using much less energy but with more complex parts. We repair all three.

How often should I clean the lint filter?

After every load. A clogged filter makes the dryer work harder, take longer and run hotter.
